German International School New York (GIS) offers bilingual education in English and German. GIS is a Pre-K through 12, independent, day school. Graduates receive two degrees: the New York State High School diploma and the German International Abitur. Students complete a rigorous, college preparatory curriculum that has an international orientation.
GIS is part of the German International School network of over 140 schools across the world, is recognized by the Permanent Conference of the Department of Education of the Federal Republic of Germany, as well as the New York State Association of Independent Schools (NYSAIS) and the New York State Department of Education. In 2009, the school received the award “Excellent German School Abroad.”
GIS’s accreditation by both the German and US educational authorities attracts an international community of families and students. A large number of GIS students have dual or triple citizenships. Such an international and diverse community of students creates lifelong professional and social connections. The GIS school community encourages students to develop values of openness, tolerance and fearlessness about approaching new people, communities and experiences.
German language proficiency is not required for students entering Pre-K and Kindergarten. In these grades GIS uses the one teacher, one language approach, where there are two teachers – one speaking exclusively English and the other speaking exclusively German – which helps children acquire both languages. First grade and above requires German language proficiency at grade level.
GIS has rolling admissions and no official application deadlines. Admittance depends on available space and meeting admissions requirements. Learn more about GIS by attending an open house, information session, or scheduling a personal tour. Visit the GIS website to register.
