Lars Hierath, Head of School, German International School New York (GISNY)
Mr. Hierath joined the school administration team at the German International School New York in August 2018. In his early school years, Mr. Hierath lived in Bremerhaven, Germany. As a young student, Mr. Hierath was fascinated by the USA and completed an exchange year in Dayton, Ohio. After completing community service in Germany, he began his studies at the University of Bremen to become a high school music and English teacher. During his college years, he moved to Northern Ireland to study at the University of Ulster.
Mr. Hierath started his teaching career at the central school Carl von Ossietzki in Bremerhaven. In 2006, he and his family moved abroad to Namibia, Africa where he worked at a German school. After five years, he and his family returned to Germany where he was named program director at the Johann-Gutenberg School in Bremerhaven and later, became head of school. In 2015, he continued his career as head of school at the Lloyd Gymnasiums Bremerhaven.
Now as head of school at the German International School New York, he views this role as a great honor and endeavor. At the same time, life in the “Big Apple” New York is a dream come true that he’s excited to share with his family. Mr. Hierath lives in White Plains, NY with his wife, Miriam; two daughters, Yara and Jil; and their family dog, Junior. In his spare time, Mr. Hierath likes to fulfill his great passion for music (he used to work as a saxophonist in big bands and orchestras in different parts of Europe!)
